Tudor House Plans
For a list of trusted home plan firms specializing in Tudor home designs, please visit the Tudor Home Plans Directory.Tudor house plans traces its roots back to the Tudor period which occurred during the 15th and 16th centuries, when the Tudor family came to the throne.
Tudor style castles and churches were typically built of stone that only rich homeowners could afford. Middle-class homes were typically constructed of wood for the timber-framing. Either brick or white-washed wattle was used to fill in the spaces between the wood. The wooden timbers were coated with black tar, to create the famous Tudor 'black-and-white' effect. Tudor house plans are so identifiable because their wooden framework is made up of uneven beams that can be seen from the outside.
Today, the Tudor house plan style is still characterized by its paraplated gables, tall, narrow windows detailed with stone mullions, transoms and the Tudor arch, which is a low elliptical or pointed arch drawn from four centers. Projecting oriel window bays were common in original Tudor homes and later incorporated into some twentieth-century designs as well. Many of today's Tudor houses have the same steep, thatched roofs covered with clay or tiles and massive chimneys. Tudor house plans often call for upper stories which hang over the lower ones, this design technique is called a jetty.
