  • Pool and Hot Tub Decks

If you have an above or inground pool, building a deck around it will allow for easier access and offer a great place to relax. Pool and hot tub decks are a very attractive design element.

Decks for above-ground pools are raised in height and feature stairs and railings. An above-ground pool's walls are not used in any aspect of deck framing or support. Essentially, a pool deck is built as a separate structure built around the pool. A pool deck's height is important to ensure safety, since building it too high or low can be dangerous.

For an inground pool, you will probably want to surround your pool with concrete, stone or bricks tiles. Ensure you choose material that not only fits your design, but that provides much-needed traction and durability. A pool's coping is a great way to unify the patio with the pool. Coping can have some materials such as tiles extend over the top of the pool's wall to properly connect the pool and the patio.

Hot tub decks can be built underneath, surrounding or on one side of a hot tub. Some are covered over fully or partially to protect the hot tub area from harsh weather. A built-in seating area such as benches are great for hot tub areas and wood fences are screens are great for privacy.

A hot tub deck needs to have frames that can withstand the weight of the tub. As hot tubs are very heavy they should never be placed on an already existing deck. A structural engineer should also be consulted to ensure the deck is strong enough to hold the extreme weight of the tub.
