  • Patios

Can't afford the time or cost of building a wooden deck? Then your best choice is probably a traditional patio.

Patios are a classic design element when installed directly off rear patio doors, around inground swimming pools or even to create a quiet sitting area in gardens. Patios are ideal as they are accessible to all and can unify a garden with practical outdoor space.

Patio decks can be made of concrete, stones, tiles or bricks. Patios, like decks, also need to sit on a solid foundation. Patios should be constructed out of materials that are strong and resistant to slipping and should suit the need of the patio. Patios can be square, rectangular or free formed and can be any size to accommodate their intended use.

Concrete is popular as it tends to be affordable and durable. Concrete in its most simple form is gray in color, strong and very affordable. Concrete can also be dyed, stenciled or stamped or a combination of these techniques so that the patio looks like natural stones, bricks or even tiles. These modern concrete techniques will give simple concrete a unique pattern or color but certainly cost more as they require more time, skill and machinery.

Bricks or stones also offer distinct design options. Stones and bricks are set and secured together using sand or a mortar mix. Stones - either natural or synthetic - can form many patterns or textures and are offered in thousands of colors. Bricks or stones that are small in size can warp over time. Concrete, bricks or stones that are larger tend to offer extra durability and are more resistant to damage.
