Skirting
Deck skirts are a popular aesthetic consideration for those building raised decks. Deck skirts serve the aesthetic purpose of blocking off the area under a deck.
Many use the area underneath a deck for storing such items as lawnmowers or garden tools. Some cover the area but install an easy to open latched gate for easy access. Even if you do not want to use the area as storage space, a gate is a great idea for general deck inspections or maintenance. Deck skirting will prevent animals or children from going under the deck and will also disguise the look of your deck's frame.
To use the under area of your deck, it is important that no weeds grow there. It is best to remove all grass and then place a layer of landscaping fabric over it. Plastic will not work as it does not allow water to get through and therefore the water will simply accumulate. After the fabric has been draped, it is a good idea to cover it with a layer of gravel or stones.
A deck skirt is great if you want the area entirely hidden. Deck skirting is often made of wood. An inexpensive but attractive way to skirt the deck is to use the lattice. A lattice can be best described as checkered piece of flimsy wood that is attractive and affordable. A lattice can be painted or stained to match the deck.
Flowers, trees, ivy and stones surrounding the bottom of the deck are other ways to enhance the deck skirting. Flower pots or benches in front of the deck skirting will also incorporate the deck and the screen into the overall design of the yard.
