Deck posts are attached to the foundation on the ground and vertically hold the beams in place.

The size, height, number and location of the deck posts depend on the type of deck being built. To ensure the strength of the posts, it is important that pressure treated wood is used.

A high deck requires obviously requires longer posts. It is important that the posts are the appropriate length and that they are level with the house and adjacently level with the ground. For this reason, post ends should be perfectly square and flat.

To ensure the posts have the right height, it is wise to cut them after they are properly situated in the foundation. Deck beams normally sit directly on the post and then are mounted using specially designed fasteners.
