Deck beams are also a very important part of the deck framing. Deck beams run horizontally from post to post. Deck beams also assist to support the deck joists.

If the deck has a ledger, beams should run parallel to it. Beams also run parallel to other beams. Because they play a crucial role in supporting the structure, deck beams are very heavy, large and strong.

Depending on the size of the deck beams can be used as either single beams or double beams. If a double beam is required, then this essentially means that two beams are joined for extra support. Some decks call for triple beams or even more if additional support is required.

Beams sit on the posts and can be fastened different ways including specific bolts or with post caps.

Beams can be purchased at the appropriate length or if needed, you can extend the beam with another. To do this the ends need to be square and need to meet directly on the center of a post to ensure it has the proper amount of strength. Galvanized post caps or wooden cleats can be used to mount the beams to the posts.

Deck beams use pressure treated wood and some even suggest that it is best to face the crown side up.
