Awnings
Deck awnings or canopies are a great way to enjoy the outdoors on your deck while sheltering you from the rays of the hot sun and from the rain. Awnings tend to slope towards the sun for better shade and to allow rain water to run off. Awnings are retractable and many can be opened fully or slightly which is ultimately convenient to accommodate the different sun locations.
Deck awnings are commonly made out of fabrics such as canvass or even plastic. Some are solid fabric, while others still let air flow through and only partially block the sun as they are made of a mesh. Deck awnings have a support frame that is commonly made of aluminum but can also be made of wood or vinyl.
Awnings will not only make your outdoor experience more enjoyable, if placed over a window, they also prevent direct sunlight from going into your home which will protect furniture, flooring and even artwork.
For those that have a patio or deck away from their house there are freestanding awnings available. These sit on the ground with large posts. Freestanding awnings are offered in many different sizes and colors and are offered as retractable versions.
House mounted awnings are very popular as well. These awnings can be fastened to your house or roof. Awnings are available that can cover small or large areas of any deck with different length and widths. Awning fabrics can be found in many solid colors and a variety of striped versions.
Some awnings can be opened and retracted manually, while others are completely motorized. Motorized versions have a button that will allow you to easily and effortlessly open or close it. Manual versions often use a hand crack to perform this function.
Some awnings are easy enough to be installed by a do-it-yourselfer. Larger, more complicated motorized awnings may require a specialized professional.
